Dan Brown-Angels & Demons

Mystery drama

The Illuminati has surfaced from the shadows to carry out the final phase of its legendary vendetta against its most hated enemy... the Catholic Church.

Langdon's worst fears are confirmed on the eve of the Vatican's holy conclave, when a messenger of the Illuminati announces he has hidden an unstoppable time bomb at the very heart of Vatican City. With the countdown under way, Langdon jets to Rome to join forces with Vittoria Vetra, a beautiful and mysterious Italian scientist, to assist the Vatican in a desperate bid for survival.

Embarking on a frantic hunt through sealed crypts, dangerous catacombs, deserted cathedrals, and even to the heart of the most secretive vault on earth, Langdon and Vetra follow a 400-year old trail of ancient symbols that snakes across Rome toward the long-forgotten Illuminati lair... a secret location that contains the only hope for Vatican salvation.

An explosive international thriller, ANGELS & DEMONS careens from enlightening epiphanies to dark truths as the battle between science and religion turns to war...

Dan Brown-The Da Vinci Code

Mystery drama

While in Paris on business, Harvard symbologist Robert Langdon receives an urgent late-night phone call: the elderly curator of the Louvre has been murdered inside the museum. Near the body, police have found a baffling cipher. Solving the enigmatic riddle, Langdon is stunned to discover it leads to a trail of clues hidden in the works of Da Vinci…clues visible for all to see…and yet ingeniously disguised by the painter.

Langdon joins forces with a gifted French cryptologist, Sophie Neveu, and learns the late curator was involved in the Priory of Sion—an actual secret society whose members included Sir Isaac Newton, Botticelli, Victor Hugo, and Da Vinci, among others. The Louvre curator has sacrificed his life to protect the Priory's most sacred trust: the location of a vastly important religious relic, hidden for centuries.

In a breathless race through Paris, London, and beyond, Langdon and Neveu match wits with a faceless powerbroker who appears to work for Opus Dei—a clandestine, Vatican-sanctioned Catholic sect believed to have long plotted to seize the Priory's secret. Unless Langdon and Neveu can decipher the labyrinthine puzzle in time, the Priory's secret—and a stunning historical truth—will be lost forever.

In an exhilarating blend of relentless adventure, scholarly intrigue, and cutting wit, symbologist Robert Langdon (first introduced in Dan Brown's bestselling Angels & Demons) is the most original character to appear in years. THE DA VINCI CODE heralds the arrival of a new breed of lightening-paced, intelligent thriller…surprising at every twist, absorbing at every turn, and in the end, utterly unpredictable…right up to its astonishing conclusion.

Robin Cook-Invasion

Sci-Fi thriller

Robin Cook envisions in this book a strange contact with extraterrestrials. A spaceship arrives to Earth to dump some black and rounded disks to the surface of the planet. Those who handle the disks receive a sting, soon followed by flu-like symptoms and ending in a kind of zombie assimilation into the alien consciousness and began to prepare everything for the real aliens' arrival. Ultimately a mismatched group gathers to combat this invasion including the fiance of the main infected person Beau. They discover that this has been planned for a very long time as the rocks just activate the virus which is in fact in our DNA. After working by themselves for a while and two of the group being killed they hook up with Doctor Harlan McCay who has a Biological Warfare Reasearch Lab at his disposal. He explains that he has a degree in immunology but had a private practice in a nearby town. When the invasion started he headed to the lab which is left over from the Cold War but is still stocked and was at least somewhat staffed (the staff apparently left when they got infected) and although it was a secret the local Native Americans knew about it and had at some point in time informed him of it. The lab had everything they needed to work on a cure for the virus. They find that infecting themselves with another virus will cause the virus to expose itself and oxygen will destroy it (it came here 3 billion years ago when there was little to no oxygen so it's vulnerable to it in a virion state) and after testing this with infected mice (it cures all but the one infected the longest who dies: apparently if its in your system too long the cure kills you) they take a cold virus that has never been encountered before (it was artifically engineered) as it is mild enough to not kill the person infected but will do the job. Also as it is artifically created no one will have encountered it so they will have no immunity to it and everyone will be infected. They then storm the mansion where a machine is being built to bring the aliens to Earth from other planets this virus has taken over. The group smashes the machine with a car and it is destroyed. Beau is too far gone to be cured and tells them to run. He dies and the mansion is destroyed but they are able to spread the cure and the invasion is ended.

Robin Cook-Fatal Cure

Medical thriller

Fatal Cure tells the story of two young doctors, with their 9 year old daughter who suffers from chronic disease-cystic fibrosis , who are lured

to a small town in Vermont to start a career. David gets a job as an internist with the local HMO, while Angela gets an offer from the local hospital as a pathologist. The story takes aim at managed care and health maintenance organizations.

David and Angela quickly find out that their idyllic town harbors dark secrets. Patients at the local hospital keep dying prematurely. The hospital grounds are terrorized by a rapist, and the young family is shocked to find a dead body in their basement. Angela is faced with sexual harassement and David soon experiences the wrath of the HMO administrators for spending too much time with his patients and ordering too many tests and hospital stays.

David and Angela end up not just getting fired from their jobs -and deeply in debt, but their lives are threatened as well. The novel ends with a denouement somewhat similar to "Silence of the Lambs."

Gabriel Garcia Marquez-One Hundred Years Of Solitude

Family saga novel

Published in 1967 as Cien años de solidad, this novel is considered García Márquez’s masterpiece, the breakthrough work that put him on the literary map. It was written in eighteen months of solitude, where García Márquez locked himself into his room with paper and cigarettes, writing day and night while his wife took care of family affairs. Translated into thirty some languages, winner of four international prizes, One Hundred Years of Solitude is certainly one of the most remarkable books ever written, a tale that spans generations, told against a backdrop where the absurd can seem logical and the sensible ludicrous.
Although a summary is close to impossible, I will nevertheless try. In essence, the novel paints the picture of an enduring family living in a South American town called Macondo, a mysterious place where every day brings its inhabitants a share of wonder, magic, grief, sorrow, and almost magical opportunities for transformation. The book picks up the Buendía family from its establishment by a eccentric patriarch and a tenacious matriarch, and tracks their descendants through the family’s rise, fall, and decay. The book is woven from a rich tapestry of unique characters, each brimming with a life that makes their passions and quirks seem like reflections of us all – it is an emotional swirl that is sensuous and filled with sentiment, but never sensational or sentimental. As we follow the Buendía family through growth and decay, war and peace, hardship and joy, we realize that we a witnessing nothing less than the slow process of life itself – like watching rust form beautiful patterns in the timeless eye of God.

Gabriel Garcia Marquez- Love in the Time of Cholera

Love story

”’It was inevitable . . .’ So begins this story set in a country on the Caribbean coast of South America – a story that ranges from the late nineteenth century to the early decades of our own, tracing the lives of three people and their entwined fates. And yet, at first nothing seems inevitable, for this is a tale of unrequited love. Fifty years, nine months, and four days’ worth, to be exact. For that is how long Florentino Ariza has waited to declare, once again, his undying love to Fermina Daza, whom he courted and almost won so many years before. He has the bad grace, however, to make his declaration at the funeral of her husband, one of the most illustrious men of his time, a patron of the arts, distinguished professor of medicine, and leader in the fight against the cholera epidemics that once ravaged the country. Shaken by Florentino’s bold speech, Fermina banishes him from her house. But that is only the beginning. With the craft, humor, and accumulated wisdom of a master of fiction, García Márquez transports them (and the reader) back to those early days when they first met, courted, and were forced apart. He shows them going their very different ways – Florentino with his poetry, his rise to prominence in business, and (his devotion to Fermina Daza notwithstanding) his constant pursuit of women. And we see Fermina as she is wooed by the most sought-after bachelor of their time, Doctor Juvenal Urbino de la Calle; as they wed; as they experience all the events and emotions – honeymoon, passion, children, small betrayals, separations, dependencies, and adventures – that constitute a long, sturdy marriage. And then, at what might seem the end of their lives, Fermina Daza and Florentino Ariza are brought together once more, in a meeting whose outcome is as fateful, as suspenseful, as any in literature.”

Isabel Allende-Zorro

Historical fiction

A swashbuckling adventure story that reveals for the first time how Diego de la Vega became the masked man we all know so well.

Born in southern California late in the eighteenth century, he is a child of two worlds. Diego de la Vega’s father is an aristocratic Spanish military man turned landowner; his mother, a Shoshone warrior. Diego learns from his maternal grandmother, White Owl, the ways of her tribe while receiving from his father lessons in the art of fencing and in cattle branding. It is here, during Diego’s childhood, filled with mischief and adventure, that he witnesses the brutal injustices dealt Native Americans by European settlers and first feels the inner conflict of his heritage.

At the age of sixteen, Diego is sent to Barcelona for a European education. In a country chafing under the corruption of Napoleonic rule, Diego follows the example of his celebrated fencing master and joins La Justicia, a secret underground resistance movement devoted to helping the powerless and the poor. With this tumultuous period as a backdrop, Diego falls in love, saves the persecuted, and confronts for the first time a great rival who emerges from the world of privilege.

Between California and Barcelona, the New World and the Old, the persona of Zorro is formed, a great hero is born , and the legend begins. After many adventures – duels at dawn, fierce battles with pirates at sea, and impossible rescues – Diego de la Vega, a.k.a. Zorro, returns to America to reclaim the hacienda on which he was raised and to seek justice for all who cannot fight for it themselves.

Isabel Allende-The House Of The Spirits

Historical novel

A best seller and critical success in Europe and Latin America, The House of the Spirits is the magnificent epic of the Trueba family - their loves, their ambitions, their spiritual quests, their relations with one another, and their participation in the history of their times, a history that becomes destiny and overtakes them all.

We begin - at the turn of the century, in an unnamed South American country - in the childhood home of the woman who will be the mother and grandmother of the clan, Clara del Valle. A warm-hearted, hypersensitive girl, Clara has distinguished herself from an early age with her telepathic abilities - she can read fortunes, make objects move as if they had lives of their own, and predict the future. Following the mysterious death of her sister, the fabled Rosa the Beautiful, Clara has been mute for nine years, resisting all attempts to make her speak. When she breaks her silence, it is to announce that she will be married soon.

Her husband-to-be is Esteban Trueba, a stern, willful man, given to fits of rage and haunted by a profound loneliness. At the age of thirty-five, he has returned to the capital from his country estate to visit his dying mother and to find a wife. (He was Rosa's fiancé, and her death has marked him as deeply as it has Clara.) This is the man Clara has foreseen - has summoned - to be her husband; Esteban, in turn, will conceive a passion for Clara that will last the rest of his long and rancorous life.

We go with this couple as they move into the extravagant house he builds for her, a structure that everyone calls “the big house on the corner,” which is soon populated with Clara's spiritualist friends, the artists she sponsors, the charity cases she takes an interest in, with Esteban's political cronies, and, above all, with the Trueba children: Blanca, a practical, self-effacing girl who will, to the fury of her father, form a lifelong liaison with the son of his foreman, and the twins, Jaime and Nicolás, the former a solitary, taciturn boy who becomes a doctor to the poor and unfortunate; the latter a playboy, a dabbler in Eastern religions and mystical disciplines and, in the third generation, the child Alba, Blanca's daughter (the family does not recognize the real father for years, so great is Esteban's anger), a child who is fondled and indulged and instructed by them all.

For all their good fortune, their natural (and supernatural) talents, and their powerful attachments to one another, the inhabitants of “the big house on the corner” are not immune to the larger forces of the world. And, as the twentieth century beats on, as Esteban becomes more strident in his opposition to Communism, as Jaime becomes the friend and confidant of the Socialist leader known as the Candidate, as Alba falls in love with a student radical, the Truebas become actors - and victims - in a tragic series of events that gives The House of the Spirits a deeper resonance and meaning.

It is the supreme achievement of this splendid novel that we feel ourselves members of this large, passionate (and sometimes exasperating) family, that we become attached to them as if they were our own. That this is the author's first novel makes it all the more extraordinary. The House of the Spirits marks the appearance of a major, international writer.

In less than 100 sentences, The Blue Day Book conveys this message with great compassion and humor. Its vehicle is charming black-and-white photographs of animals that are strangely human and completely free of judgment or pretension. The humble marriage of easy text and beautiful images takes the reader through the entire evolution of a blue day, examines what it feels like, what causes it, and how to get over it.

Humorous

After nearly a year of world travel, homesick Becky and her new husband Luke curtail their honeymoon to return to England. Becky soon learns that a year is a long time, and though her shopping tendencies haven't changed (well, maybe they've gotten worse, if that's possible), other things have changed. For instance, in her absence, her best friend Suze seems to have found a new best friend, Lulu. And Becky's mom and dad are acting strange and secretive...for good reason. It's not long after her return that Becky finds out she has a half sister --- a dream come true for Becky. With Suze distracted by motherhood and her new friend, Becky shifts all her focus and enthusiasm to her new sister Jessica. "The point is," Becky observes on their first shopping excursion together, "we're here! It's a fantastic day, sunny but not too warm, with tiny cloud scudding across the blue sky. As I get out, I look around the sunlit street, feeling all buzzy with anticipation. My first shopping trip with my sister!" Sounds great, doesn't it? Not so fast. Jessica, it turns out, is not the shopping enthusiast Becky is and, in fact, is frugal (a word foreign to Becky). Becky's high hopes of an idyllic sisterly relationship with weekend manicures and pedicures, forays into Versace shops, and lazy afternoons at outdoor cafes gossiping over lattes are dashed quickly. And, as if familial trouble isn't enough, Becky's novice marriage is on shaky ground too. Not thinking, Becky promises a questionable character that Luke will help him market the opening of a new hotel. When Luke finds out what Becky has committed him to without his permission (and all because the gentleman in question bought her a handbag!), he is livid. And, in Becky's eyes, it looks like Luke is beginning to prefer mousy, practical and cheap Jessica to her. Everything is on the line for Becky: her marriage, her sister, her friendship, her allowance! As in all the Shopaholic books, Kinsella gives us an over-the-top, almost unbelievable, but highly comical Becky, ever gambling, this time trying to buy time with creditors and win her husband's love back. Kinsella gambles too: Becky verges on formulaic (how much more can she buy, and how many more clever letters can she write to avoid paying bills?) --- but it's a winning formula. Becky is as funny as ever, and you can't help but root for her.

In a surprise move, Luke proposes to her in front of all the wedding guests which number Becky's parents among them. Overjoyed at this unexpected development, Becky's mother speedily begins planning a backyard wedding accompanied by all the overblown finery her middle-class tastes can dream up of. Always a connoisseur of fine stuff and with her tastes particularly sharpened by time spent in New York city, Becky inwardly shudders at this but keeps silent so as not to hurt her mother's feelings. They return to New York where Luke's Manhattan socialite mother offers them an all-paid, much-in-demand glamorous wedding at the Plaza hotel. This is the sort of Cinderella-wedding that Becky had always hoped to have. So, despite her dislike of Luke's mom, Becky weakly accepts her offer. Now, unable to refuse either woman, Becky finds herself facing the prospect of having two weddings, on the same date, on different continents. “

Humorous

For Rebecca Bloomwood, life is peachy. She has a job on morning TV, telling people how to manage their money – a subject on which she is an expert. Her bank manager is actually being nice to her, despite being just a tad overdrawn. And the icing on the brioche is that her boyfriend is moving to New York …and has asked her to go with him.

New York! The Museum of Modern Art! The Guggenheim! The Metropolitan Opera House! And Becky does mean to go to all these. Honestly. It’s just that it seems silly not to check out a few other places first. Like Bloomingdales. And Saks. And that amusing little place she’s been told about where you can sometimes get a Prada dress for $10. Or was it $100? Anyway, it’s full of fantastic bargains.

Robert Ludlum- The Bourne Identity

The protagonist is found floating in the Mediterranean Sea with several bullet wounds, including a head wound which has given him amnesia. The doctor treating him finds a message surgically embedded in his hip that contains details of a Swiss bank account, presumably anonymous.

In Zürich, Switzerland, the protagonist learns that his name is Jason Bourne. While attempting to retrace his steps on his previous visit to the city he attracts the attention of several people who either fear him, warn him of danger, or try to kill him—but they all unhelpfully assume that he already knows why. He begins to suspect, on the basis of circumstantial evidence, that he may have been a professional assassin prior to losing his memory. He also meets a woman named Marie St Jacques in Zürich and on the spur of the moment, uses her as a sort of hostage to escape an attempt on his life in a crowded convention hotel. Realizing that he has put her life in danger as well, he risks his own life to prevent her from being executed. This is the first clue that there may be more to the protagonist than a cold-blooded killer.

The 1988 miniseries is reasonably true to the plot of the novel, but the film was changed to exclude the subplot about the terrorist Carlos and, equally or more significantly, the fact of Bourne's innocence—it is maintained that he actually was an assassin, though of CIA employ.
